(KETV 7) - Iowa Gov. Chet Culver has been warning his state’s homeowners about the rising risk of springtime floods.
Despite the warnings, homeowners in Council Bluffs don’t appear to be too concerned. Insurance agents said they’re not terribly concerned, either, but they want people to be aware of the risk.
“We don’t have a basement,” said Katie White. “If we do get flooded, it’s in my living room.
“In 2008, White bought a new home near 13th Street and 15th Avenue, an area that’s considered part of a flood plain because it’s 50 yards from Indian Creek. She said she hasn’t seen a flood since then, but came close.
“You looked over and it was probably 3 feet below the sidewalk,” said White.
She said a real estate agent told her to consider buying flood insurance but she decided against it. Now, her concerns are growing.
“That was thing going into when we were buying our home. We were like, eh, you know, we didn’t have this amount of snow and now it’s like, shoot, if it starts to melt quickly, we really don’t know what we’re in for,” White said.
