Post Office Travel Insurance Warns UK Holidaymakers to take out Travel Insurance to Protect Against the Costs of Personal Injuries Abroad

Moped Accidents one of most common mishaps affecting UK holidaymakers

London, UK (PRWeb UK) February 11, 2010 — Recent figures from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office have shown that Spain, Greece, France and Thailand were the countries where the highest numbers of hospitalisations for UK holidaymakers have been reported. While there are many reasons for being hospitalised abroad, FCO staff working overseas cited moped accidents as being one of the most frequent contributors.

As a result, Post Office Travel Insurance is warning travellers to take out appropriate levels of travel insurance to protect themselves against any costs associated with holiday medical mishaps.

Holidaymakers who injure themselves to the point that they need to be return to the UK for emergency treatment and do not have travel insurance in place will have to foot the bill. For example, if UK holidaymakers are seriously injured on a skiing holiday, an air ambulance from France to the UK can cost as much as £8,000, and up to £12,000 from Italy. Repatriation costs from the USA can run into tens of thousands of pounds, which may have to come from the travellers own pocket if not covered by travel insurance.

As Post Office Travel Insurance research has found that as many as 20 per cent of travellers fail to take out travel insurance cover before leaving the UK, large numbers of UK holidaymakers may be leaving themselves open to unexpected costs.

However, Post Office Travel Insurance is reminding holidaymakers that medical fees alone are not the only costs that travel insurance might need to cover if travellers injure themselves overseas. If UK holidaymakers end up having their arms or legs in plaster, some airlines will not allow them to travel for up to 48 hours. This may mean travellers have to cover extra accommodation costs and new flights home.

The Post Office is reminding travellers of the benefits of investing in a travel insurance policy before heading abroad, to ensure they are fully covered should an accident or emergency occur when holiday overseas.
